Parental involvement is perhaps one of the most important things in a child's academic career. We, as parents, have the ability to help them stay focused and determined while teaching them just how much their hard work will eventually pay off. Kansas City Schools are helping us make that a reality.
Family Advocates in Kansas City Schools
KANSAS CITY
Because Kansas City Schools are so dedicated to the improvement and achievement of their students, they are getting parents involved too. They believe that the only way for a child to truly succeed throughout their entire school career is to have parents involved in everything. That's where Family Advocates come in. Each Family Advocate in Kansas City Schools is assigned 12 to 17 students and does the following:
- Identify Interests: Family Advocates in Kansas City Schools work with each student and parent to identify the child's interests, build their strengths, and head off any potential behavioral problems. This interaction between the Family Advocate, you, and your child creates a very strong home-school connection where the learning never ends. You keep the same Family Advocate the entire time your child is in school, so you and your child are able to build a personal relationship with one another and the Family Advocate.
- Consistent Communication: Kansas City Schools are completely dedicated to your child, so it has become mandatory for all Family Advocates to plan and lead a minimum of 2 meetings per academic year for each family. During these meetings, performance, behavior, and expectations for your child's improvement are communicated to you and your child so there is no lapse in communication during your child's education. Your Family Advocate will also contact each family at least once a month in order to keep you up to speed on anything regarding your child.
- Help Other Teachers: Because you and your child keep the same Family Advocate throughout your child's academic career with Kansas City Schools, your Family Advocate will come to know your child very well and is in a position to help other teachers understand him as well. This put your child in a very unique place compared to other school systems. He won't slip by unnoticed by his teachers simply because your Family Advocate is there to help you and your child's teachers understand him a lot better.
Overall, increasing parental involvement with children in Kansas City Schools is the most important way they are increasing achievement in their students. Feedback in the Family Advocates program says that almost all of the students involved trust their Family Advocates implicitly. Feedback also says that parents have an overall positive experience with the Family Advocates in Kansas City Schools and notice that their child's grades and behavior are getting better. Parental involvement with a faculty member who is consistent with feedback and performance is perhaps the most brilliant idea Kansas City Schools have developed with regard to making our children's lives better. Hats off to them!
