Definition of Marketing Mix - Product, Price, Place and Promotion

Getting the marketing mix right for your product or service means you are covering all of the important bases in your marketing campaign. Here is a definition of marketing mix and a description of its main components.

The term marketing mix refers to the primary elements that must be attended to in order to properly market a product. Also known as The 4 Ps of Marketing, the marketing mix is a very useful, if a bit general, guideline for understanding the fundamentals of what makes a good marketing campaign. Here is a brief description of each component of the 4 Ps of the marketing mix.

Price

Product: The marketing mix concept has its roots in the 1950s U.S. corporate marketing world, and the practice of marketing has obviously evolved tremendously since this term was invented. One of the changes is that there are a lot more services available nowadays, such as those available online. Also, the distinction between product and service has become more blurry (e.g., is a Web-based software application a product or a service?). Either way, product here refers to products or services. The product you offer needs to be able to meet a specific, existing market demand. Or, you need to be able to create a market niche through building a strong brand.

Price: The price you set for your offering plays a large role in its marketability. Pricing for offerings that are more commonly available in the market is more elastic, meaning that unit sales will go up or down more responsively in response to price changes. By contrast, those products that have a generally more limited availability in the market (but with strong demand) are more inelastic, meaning that price changes will not affect unit sales very much. The price elasticity of your offering can be determined through various market testing techniques.

Place: This term really refers to any way that the customer can obtain a product. Provision of a product can occur via any number of distribution channels, such as in a retail store, through the mail, via downloadable files, on a cruise ship, in a hair salon, etc. The ease and options through which you can make your product available to your customers will have an effect on your sales volume.

Promotion: Promotion is concerned with any vehicle you employ for getting people to know more about your offering. Advertising, public relations, point-of-sale displays, and word-of-mouth promotion are all traditional ways for promotion. Promotion can be seen as a way of closing the information gap between would-be sellers and would-be buyers. Your choice of a promotional strategy will be dependent upon your budget, the type of offering you are selling, and availability of said promotional vehicle.

Marketing has come a long way from the 4 Ps of yesteryear, and yet understanding this marketing mix is for your product remains very relevant today. The marketing mix serves as an excellent touchstone for continually checking that you are covering all of the bases in your marketing campaign.

Low Price Car Insurance - How to Find Cheap Auto Insurance

It does not matter what kind of driving record you have or what kind of car you drive; there is low price car insurance available for you. Naturally, someone with a cheaper car and a spotless driving record is not going to pay as much for their insurance as someone with a couple of moving violations on their record who drives a luxury car, but you could almost certainly pay less than you are for car insurance. Everyone can find low price car insurance if they take the time to look at the rates offered by different insurers and compare; something which it is easy to do online.

If you ask your insurance agent if it was possible to pay less than the high premiums you currently have and they are unable or unwilling to help you, then you should look for a better insurance policy. There are many websites which allow you to gather multiple insurance quotes for no cost in a matter of minutes.

Price

One thing to try is to look for a new policy about a month before your current policy is set for renewal. Look at the amount of coverage you have as well as the premium you pay for this coverage. You can usually find these details on the very first page of your policy.

Look at the deductibles for collisions and for comprehensive coverage. In many cases, these may be the same, but if they differ, many insurance representatives will use a larger deductible for the collision part of the policy because this coverage is generally more pricey.

Also look at the liability limits of your policy. These may be listed as single or split liability limits. Split limits denote the amount that the insurer will pay out in the event that you are liable for an accident. For instance, if you see that your limit is 100/300/50, this means that they will pay up to 0,000 to any person injured in the accident, up to a limit of 0,000 total for all persons injured. The 50 means that the insurer will pay for up to ,000 of property damage caused in an accident for which you are liable.

The way that a single liability limit works is much more straightforward. There will be a single number instead of three, 0,000 for instance. A single liability limit is the total amount that the insurer will pay out in the event that you are liable for an accident, covering injury and/or personal damage.

You will also find a section including items like medical payments, limits for under insured or uninsured motorists or passengers as well as towing and rental reimbursement. Your coverage for under insured and uninsured motorists should be equal - this is the portion of your insurance policy which covers you and your household in the event that you are injured in an accident caused by an uninsured or under insured driver.

After you have looked over all of the important figures listed on your policy, the rest is pretty easy. All you have to do is go visit one or more of the sites which allow you to receive multiple car insurance quotes at once and enter the information you have gathered from your policy. You can then compare the quotes you see to find low priced car insurance.

Estimating a Paint Job - Square Foot Price

The square foot method of estimating a paint job is probably the dumbest way to estimate a paint job. Sorry, I am wrong; it is the second dumbest job. It just seems like the dumbest method. The winner of the dumbest job goes to the W.A.G. (wild-ass guess) Method of Estimating a Paint Job. Out of the basic three methods of how to estimate a paint job, the W.A.G. Method of Estimating a Paint Job, is the creation of the magician of the paint estimators. This painting contractor can look at a ,000 paint job and in 5 seconds give a very inaccurate price on painting the interior of a house. This magician love to bask in the glory when homeowners the world over tell this paint estimator that he is simply fabulous. Anyway, the W.A.G. method isn't even worth spit.

The Square Foot Method warrants acknowledgment, if for no other reason than to point out that although a great many painters subscribe to this method, it really is quite a stupid way to arrive at a price for a paint job. Why is a this lame way to estimate? The question is how can anyone estimate a price of a paint job by the square footage of a floor? A couple of simple examples will shine some light on the darkness of this method.

Price

Let's take two interior paint jobs; the first one is a family room 200 square feet built in the 1950's so it has an eight foot high ceiling. The doors are the style that was popular in residential construction back then, flush doors. The windows are also a style that was popular back then, standard size but four divided windows commonly called two over two, or 2/2. All the molding is of the style popular in the 1950's also, a pattern called ranch or clamshell molding, a simple smooth slightly curved molding. The molding consists of baseboard, door trim and window trim. There are two flush doors and four windows in this room.

The second room was built in the 1980's, also 200 square feet. This room has an eighteen foot high ceiling. The doors are reflective of the decade that his room was built in, three panel doors, and six wooden French Doors; the four windows are a true twelve individual pane widow commonly called a six over six or 6/6. This room has a very deep profile colonial trim. The molding is baseboard, chair rail, crown molding, door trim and window trim. Don't forget this room has six doors and four windows.

If someone estimates these rooms using the square foot method, they will arrive at the same price because both rooms have exactly the same square footage of floor. But you will see that the latter room has more than double the square footage of wall, and that both the ceiling and the extra square footage of wall are at twice the height of the first room, entailing much longer times to paint these areas. Also the time to paint a French Door is double the time to paint a flush door, and the second room has six doors while the first has two. The windows on the second job being 6/6 vs. 2/2 also take twice as long to paint. The second room has three times the molding as the first room and the crown molding is eighteen feet off the ground, meaning two times as long to paint than molding at arm's length.

Obviously, estimating a room by the square footage of floor is a very inaccurate method of estimating an interior paint job.

Can it Get Any Worse?

Bad economy, poor healthcare, gulf oil spill, tornadoes, hurricanes, volcanoes, earthquakes, cats and dogs living in sin together, what else can happen? We haven't had a good plague in a while. Oh wait, what about H1N1. I just read they had to dump millions of dollars of the vaccine because it had expired. What happens now if we have an outbreak? What about the stock market, my future, my kids and their futures? What will I do? What will I do?

kansas city chiefs shirt

No doubt these are trying times to say the least. Makes a person want to just throw up their hands and catch the next flight to an uninhabited island. I know the thought has crossed my mind a time or two recently. Everything we've worked for seems to be crumpling before our eyes. A lot of our problems are because of the greed of a few. So what's a person to do to stay sane and not want to go out in a blaze of glory?

KANSAS CITY

Before you make a trip to Wal-Mart to buy an assault weapon, take a moment and read on. Like you I'm very frustrated but I do feel there is hope. I also feel strongly that the hope starts with us as individuals not with our leaders. Let's face it they aren't getting it. They use fear to gain control and that's how we can stop the craziness, by not buying into it.

This old earth has had trying times in the past. I'm sure that local people in Europe lost hope when Rome invaded. Surely people lost hope during the Dark Ages and the plagues. If you look closely at history you will find that we don't have so bad after all. Think of what it must have been like to live in China under Mao or in Russia under Khrushchev, or for that matter Germany under Hitler. When you look at things that way we have it pretty good, we're just hitting a rough patch, having some growing pains. That could be a good thing if we don't lose hope and learn from our mistakes.

So what do I mean, "hope". Hope, in my opinion, is just the use of positive thinking. You change your energy from looking at all the bad things and start looking at all the good things in your life. When you focus on what's going right and ignore the bad you begin to attract the good to yourself. I don't understand all the in's and out's of how it works but it does. Once you shift from the glass being half empty to it being half full something magical begins to happen. Life seems a lot easier to cope with.

Now I'm not advocating that we all become Pollyanna's and become blinded to the bad that is all around us. That's just plain stupid. We need to be aware so we can make wise business and life decisions. Yet we can begin to look at life for the good it gives us and become centered on that. I know that's my goal.

I also find comfort in the Serenity Prayer that is recited at AA meetings around the world. There's a lot of wisdom in it for all of us whether we are sober or not. I'll leave you with its wise words:

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
