Downtown Lawrence Kansas - What Makes It Great

There is an endless list of things that sets Downtown Lawrence, Kansas apart from downtowns in other communities. This will be the first in a series of articles in which I share with you all the reasons that I believe Downtown Lawrence is great.

As I write this article, I am anticipating one of my favorite reasons. I'm sitting in South Park on a perfect summer evening. Frothy clouds skim across the sky and the temperature and humidity are uncharacteristically comfortable for a summer night in Kansas.

The Lawrence City Band is assembling and tuning up while friends and neighbors find the perfect spot to spread their blankets and set up their chairs. Over my left shoulder, the Hoop Mamas are demonstrating their prowess with colorful hula hoops and to my right, Bill the Balloon Man already has a line of eager children waiting for him to twist his colorful balloons into fanciful shapes. Before the night is over, there will be dozens of kids sporting balloon hats shaped like flowers and Jayhawks, wielding floppy swords and sending their butterflies lofting into the sky.

The concert begins as the crowd stands to salute the presentation of the colors accompanied by a rousing rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. The announcer's deep, sonorous voice introduces each piece as the audiences settles in for an hour of great music, good company and a quintessential small town America evening of fun.

There is a place for every type of audience member at a Lawrence City Band Concert. The eastern quadrant is made up of fairly dense, neat rows of lawn chairs where the serious listeners sit quietly in rapt attention, only commenting to their neighbors when the piece is over and they applaud the band. On either side of this group, you'll see more blankets than lawn chairs and an abundance of picnic baskets, dogs and kids. The crowd thins out as you move toward the west quadrant where there is decidedly more visiting than listening. There are folks reading the newspaper, children running around, Frisbees being tossed and bicycles being ridden. And, you will see all shapes and sizes of dogs, some resting quietly at their owner's feet, others barking playfully at every child that goes by.

What you won't see is anybody objecting to the talking, romping and playing. The overarching attitude is a congenial, to each his own enjoyment of the beautiful evening, the pleasure of the outdoors and the sounds of the Lawrence City Band Concert.

I feel blessed to live in a community where dreadlock wearing free spirits can live in harmony with their traditional, Midwestern neighbors and City leaders support programs like the summer band concert series. I hope I never take this for granted.

Buying Wine 101 - Picking a Wine Store

I'm not a wine connoisseur. I don't even own a decanter. (Some of my married friends own several.)

But I like wine, especially trying different kinds. There are tons of resources out there to help you learn about wine. But I don't have time to read them. Instead, I choose to learn by doing, or . . . by drinking. My only problem is knowing which bottle to pick.

If you put me in a wine store with over a thousand bottles, I either need a sommelier or a psychiatrist.

I usually start by studying the notes that hang by the bottles. The ones with names attached to them like Wine Spectator or Robert Parker or Bill, the stocker. I contemplate the pictures and colors of the label. I analyze the pricing structure and weigh costs and benefits. Then after an hour or so, when I'm completely frustrated, I make a completely arbitrary decision.

So I've come to this conclusion. I need help. And, since my shrink has his limits, I need to find a wine store with people who can help me through the process of buying a good bottle.

All wine stores are not created equal. Here are some of the factors to think about when choosing a wine store:

1) Selection

Don't be fooled. Having thousands of bottles is not the same as having a good selection. Many large liquor stores stockpile wine with labels that are heavily advertised and sold with the largest discount. You may walk into a store and think you've got thousands of choices, but all you really have is same bottles repeated over and over.

What makes a good selection? Look for a store: (1) with a knowledgeable wine buyer and (2) with a variety of tastes, regions, and prices. A good selection will offer both wines that are familiar and unique. Why is selection important? Think of it as playing the odds. You're much better off choosing from a few hundred wines tasted by a knowledgeable buyer than from several thousand that were trucked en masse.

2) Storage

If you walk into a store and start to sweat, turn around. Wine should not be stored at temperatures over 80 degrees, or it will lose its flavor. That's why wine is usually made and stored underground. Avoid large warehouses where the temperature may be hard to control. Seek out a wine store where the workers are happy wearing sweaters in the summer. It's likely that the wine will be well-cooled and happy too.

3) Information

A good wine store is a good source of information. Don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions and seek out staff recommendations. Many stores in Kansas City offer wine tastings, which are a great opportunity to try before you buy.

4) Price

Of course, wine prices vary widely, and I've never found one store that's consistently cheaper. Even the big discount shops are not always money savers. After you've found a store that you like based on the other three factors, you can save money by subscribing to that store's newsletters or joining its tasting club. Often, stores send out special deals and offerings to these customers first.

A special fifth category is convenience. This matters especially when you're buying in bulk, or if you are looking for a quick pick-up on the way home from work. It's good to know where several good stores are in town, so that you'll know which one to hit whenever the feeling strikes.

Here are my picks (in no particular order) for great wine stores in Kansas City:

1. Cellar and Loft. Located in Brookside, this little shop is much more than meets the eye. The upstairs is the "Loft," a showplace of new and antique home furnishings and décor. Downstairs, you can wind your way around "Cellar," a labyrinth of sorts with a good variety of wines, beers, gourmet foods, kitchen items, and more. 112 W 63rd St, Kansas City, MO, (816) 444-2444.

2. Cellar Rat. This unique boutique in the Crossroads is the anti-superstore of wine. Cellar Rat prides itself on offering a hand-picked selection with personalized service. Cellar Rat's restored building is impressive itself. 3. Vino 100. If you are in South KC, you should check out Vino 100. Vino 100's concept is to offer over 100 bottles of wine for or less. 4. Lukas Liquor / The Wine Bar. If size matters to you, Lukas Liquor bills itself as the midwest's largest merchant of fine wines, spirits, and malt beverages. 5. Rimann Liquors. No matter where you are in Kansas City, there is likely a Rimann Liquor nearby. Stores are located in Lenexa, Prairie Village, and most recently, in Briarcliff. Well, they're wrong, engineering has made me thousands upon thousands of gold, as a matter of fact, it was one of my most profitable professions during Wrath of the Lich King, and now with cataclysm, the gold making options have become even better.

Selling Pets
Selling pets is one of the best ways to make gold with engineering. As of recently blizzard has added two more engineering pets, once for each specialization, they are the De-Weaponized Mechanical Companion mechanical companion and the Personal World Destroyer. I have made a killing selling the Personal World Destroyer, I craft them at ~5-600g and they can sell upwards to 2-3k each.

If you can manage to snag yourself a lifelike mechanical toad schematic for cheap ( 1-2k or less ) learn it! I can sell these toads for 150g each, and they sell like hot cakes. I sell at least four or five pets a day, by simply selling this amount selling the pets has paid for the schematic and then some.

The Mechanical Yeti is also an excellent way to make gold with engineering, especially since the schematic is a little harder to obtain now, you need a reputation of revered ( correct me if I'm wrong ) to even start the quest, allowing you to control the market and set your own price for this pet.

Selling any of the other pets ( Pet Bombling, Lil' Smoky ) also make you some excellent gold, the materials are cheap and the pets can selling anywhere from 50-150g each, they do sell a little slower, but profit is profit!

Selling the New "Fish Feast"
Engineers now can make the new "fish feast" of cataclysm, it is called the Goblin Barbecue. Selling these at 75-100g per is great profit, especially if you're on a realm that raids constantly, they'll want the best buffs that they can acquire, and this is by far one of the easiest to get.

The Goblin Barbecue requires 2 Elementium Bars, 2 Toughened Flesh, and 2 Lavascale Fillets to craft. You can farm most of these mats to help reduce the costs and help increase the final ROI ( I recommend you farm the fish for the fillets )

Kaye Toogie - The Wormhole Ordeal
If you don't know about this now, go read up on it over at The Gnomish Coin. The way it works is, everytime you use your wormhole you have a chance to get the option "Underground", which takes you into a sewer where there is a vendor that sells rare engineering schematics. There are three total schematics, but one of them is what makes it all worth it, it is Schematic: Arcanite Dragonling. As of the shattering, this schematic is NO longer dropped by mobs and this is the only place to obtain it, I personally have sold two of them, each at 4,500g each. I use my wormhole whenever it's up, and I've gotten underground now three times, it's an easy way to make 3-5k within seconds.

Farming Primal Air in Outlands
I've found that farming Primal Air in Nagrand by using the Zapthrottle Mote Extractor is an excellent way to make gold! The place to farm them is in Nagrand, there are roughly 10-12 "clouds" that can be farmed.

What is this Zapthrottle Mote Extractor? Where do I get it?
The Mote extractor is a engineering device that "extracts" motes from Mini clouds that are all over Outlands and Northrend. To obtain the schematic, you have to go pick up a quest in Zangarmarsh. The quest can be started at Mack Diver, for the horde, and K. Lee Smallfry. The quest is fairly easy to do, it can be done in under 5 or even 10 minutes.

You are going to be flying around Nagrand, There are 10-12 clouds around that can be farmed continuously, especially since not many people know about the mote extractor. Click this map to view where the motes "spawn"

So why does primal air STILL sell? This stuff is from BC!
The main reason this stuff still sells is because people are doing the transmutation master quest, to either keep it and then drop it and changing it to elixir or potion spec, but either way, they need 5 of almost every primal that is available in Burning Crusade. Another great reason this stuff still sells is because of the twink enchant, 15 agility to gloves. I must admit, not many people have this enchant but the few that do have it, are most definitely buying primal airs, rather than going out and farming them.

Selling Fused Wiring
Selling fused wiring is an awesome way to add a little extra to your daily income. Fused Wiring only costs silver to make, but sells for 1-5 per, and you get 5 of them per craft, if you haven't been selling them, I suggest you go do so.

Selling Engineering Mounts
This is another way to gold about making gold with engineering, it does require that you do have a more gold, but the return on all of the mounts is rather nice especially the choppers.

I'm not simply talking about the chopper, but crafting and selling the two engineering flying mounts is another excellent way to make gold, I bought my 280% chopper for 2.5k just because I didn't want to get all of the materials, time is money after all.

One last tip, selling the engineering bots is another excellent way to make gold.

Not to long ago, you could not turn the channel without running into a custom bike building show. The Discovery channel was filled to the brim with programming like American Chopper starring the Teutul family and Motorcycle Mania hosted by Jesse James. KU Head coach Mark Mangino eventually converted Meier to the wide receiver position even after an impressive 2006 campaign where Kerry threw for a freshmen team record 13 touchdowns.

Mulvane Art Lab - Located at Washburn University, this is a must visit place in Topeka if you have children 2-18! The Art Lab is located in the basement level of the Mulvane Art Museum. Our children's favorites are the floor to ceiling dry erase window/wall, the drawing stations, and the mosaic wall. The staff at the Art Lab are very friendly and helpful and always have great project ideas set out to get the creative juices flowing. Best of all, it is totally free!

Shawnee Lake - Our kids love to visit Shawnee Lake to feed the ducks. There are a few different places in Topeka to feed ducks but this one has a variety of different kinds of ducks and geese and for the most part they are very friendly and tame.

Topeka Capital Building - Our older children love field trips to the Capital Building. Tours are offered for free and do not have to be scheduled in advance. The whole building has really beautiful architecture and mosaics and there lots of opportunities for learning.

Brown vs. Board of Education - Our teenage daughter loves this museum! Brown vs Board celebrates the changes in our country that have allowed integration and freedom of education for everyone. This trip is best for the pre-teen/teenager group since there is lots of reading.

Topeka Shawnee County Public Library - We go to the library at least once a week. Surprisingly enough there is much more there than just books. The children's area has a playhouse, Lego table, felt board, and lots of other cool toys/games. We borrow movies, video games, audio books, and of course books! The library also offers wide range of classes and groups, from board games to bookworms and even jugglers and musicians!

Kansas History Museum - This is one of the most overlooked spots for a free field trip in Topeka. While the actual exhibit part of the museum does cost there are plenty of things to do that don't! On the grounds at the museum there is a really great walking trail. In the summer the grass grows up so tall on the sides that you can imagine you are back in the pioneer days. There is also a playground area for the little ones, and a picnic area for lunch. Right inside museum there is a huge cowboy dress up station that features a train that you can play on and in. The next room over from the dress up station is a play area with stations focusing on farm life, pioneers, Indians, and much more!

What Kind of Cockroaches Live In Kansas?

There are two kinds of cockroaches native to Kansas and they are the German cockroach and the American cockroach. With their ability to thrive on very little, these roaches have become can be a major annoyance in Kansas homes and commercial facilities including restaurants and food service businesses, hospitals, warehouses, and offices.

The German cockroach is most commonly found in homes in Kansas City, Wichita and Topeka as well as elsewhere in Kansas. What tools will I need to "get the job done"?

Most of the instruction manuals suggest a basic tool kit is all that is needed.  It's probably best to discuss exactly what you may need with your supplier though.  There is one basic tool you will need and that is the space to carry out the build.  It sounds obvious I know, but if your garage is full to the brim with "stuff" that had no place in your house or you have a car in your garage, then you will not have the room needed.  You have to be able to access the bike from all sides during the build process, so do yourself a favor and clear out the garage (like you've been meaning to for 6 months now) or borrow space from someone.  Don't make the job more difficult than you need to.  Regarding specific equipment that you may not have then the only suggestion here would be to consider a special lift.  In terms of the cost of a special lift versus the investment in the motorcycle of your dreams then it is arguably a small price to pay.

What about repairs & maintenance?

Given that you will have built this bike from scratch then any repairs and maintenance should be easy, remember you have the experience now, you know what it took to build your bike so repairs, replacement of parts and routine maintenance should be a piece of cake!  How cool will it be knowing that you will not have to take your motorcycle to an expensive repair shop.

Do I have what it takes to create my dream from a Motorcycle Kit?

If Loose Park were a dog, it might be a poodle. The centerpiece of the 80-acre park
at Wornall Road and 51st Street donated by Ella Loose in 1929 is an elegant rose
garden encircled by classical walkways. The manicured grounds are a far cry from
October 22, 1864 when the Battle of Westport - "the Gettysburg of the West" - was
fought near here. That day the greatest clash of Civil War troops west of the
Mississippi River ended the Confederacy hopes in the West. Today, markers describe
the battle. You can exercise your dog on a rolling path around Loose Park and in the
large, grassy center of the greenspace.

Twenty minutes to the northwest you can hike with your dog for hours at Weston
Bend State Park. When Lewis and Clark reached the Weston area on July 2, 1804, the
rich soils on the banks of the Missouri River had already been under cultivation by
Indian tribes for hundreds of years.

The piers in the Missouri River were so busy shipping hemp that by 1858 Weston
was considered the largest hemp port in the world. It has been tobacco, however,
that has driven the area economy from then to now. The park contains five tobacco
barns and an interpretive display on the history of tobacco production in the
community.

Fires and floods retarded the development of Weston following the Civil War and
Lewis and Clark might recognize the same scenic views from park bluffs today as
the same ones they saw 200 years ago.

The sporty canine hikes in the 1,133-acre park run up and down hills that formed
on the edges of retreating glaciers. There is a cornucopia of interesting trails to
choose from.

The dog-friendly park's multi-purpose trail is a 3-mile asphalt loop through
wooded corridors. Energetic hikers will want to jump onto the dirt paths of the
Harpst Trail when it intersects the paved trail. This one-mile loop traipses along the
Missouri River bluffs until reaching the remains of the famous Harpst Orchards that
once produced peaches for English royalty.

The Missouri River Trail takes your dog directly to the edge of the Missouri River and
the Bear Creek Trail explores the former channel of the Missouri before a major shift
in the river in 1858. Both trails are less than one mile.

Two more short trails worth checking out are the Barn Trail and McCormick Trail,
both mown areas near the park office. The McCormick Trail leads to a warehouse of
a distillery in continuous operation since 1858.

Weston Bend State Park is on the west side of Highway 45 heading out of Kansas
City.

First introduced in 1957 this model line has enjoyed over 50 years of continuous production and many, many revisions and upgrades. Interestingly as the trend for bigger, faster, flashier chopper style machines seemed to be hitting its peak Harley introduced the most basic looking version of the Sportster - the Iron 883. The look of this bike screams "back to basics" and in a good way. It's simple, understated and ready for anything a rider may want to do to it. With a price tag of under 00 it's cheap and comes with everything you need right off the showroom floor. The 3.3 gallon tank, drag bars and mid-mounted foot pegs come standard. The true stand apart feature on this model is that pretty much everything on this machine is blacked out. About the only chrome you'll find on this are the pipes and the forks. When choosing the Black Denim paint option (the other is "Brilliant Sliver") you've got a blacked out machine with great looks. If you're looking for an affordable ride without all the chrome and flash of the current trend take a look at the Iron 883. You might just find something you like, a lot.
