2008 Kansas City Chiefs Draft Report

The Kansas City Chiefs is one of the NFL's most popular teams and retains a standing record of 104-40 since 1990. However, the team has not won any important football games in a while, and finished 2007 on a depressing note with a record of 4-12. Now with a new offensive coordinator, the team readies itself for a 2008 resurrection. The first sign of a good season will come from the draft. The Chiefs chose fifth overall in the draft and acquired some impressive talent.

The team's first choice was defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey from LSU, followed by two selections from Virginia; guard Branden Albert from Virginia and cornerback Brandon Flowers from Virginia Tech. These priority draft picks were followed by selections of running back Jamaal Charles from Texas, tight end Brad Cottam from Tennessee, safety DaJuan Morgan from North Carolina State, wide receiver Will Franklin from Missouri, cornerback Brandon Carr from Grand Valley State, offensive tackle Barry Richardson from Clemson, wide receiver Kevin Robinson from Utah State, linebacker Brian Johnston from Gardner-Webb and tight end Michael Merritt from Central Florida for the final draft pick.

The acquisition of Glenn Dorsey was the biggest news coming out of the draft. Actually, Kansas City had been gunning for defensive end Chris Long for a while, especially with the loss of Jared Allen. However, the team went with Glenn Dorsey despite having no immediate need for a defensive tackle. The team maintains that Dorsey was higher rated than Long, and also fends off concerns that Dorsey's previous leg injuries may make him a candidate for surgery (and time off) in the near future. Nevertheless, fans and some experts are applauding the Chiefs' first round pick because Dorsey is considered by many to be the best player in this year's draft.

The Chiefs aimed their bows and arrows at starters this season and came home from the hunt quite satisfied, with Dorsey, Branden Albert and Brandon Flowers. Jamaal Charles is considered a valuable player, while DaJuan Morgan was considered by many experts as the best pure free safety in this year's draft. All of these players have potential to be starting players in the new season. Though less likely to move up as quickly, the rest of the draft choices are still viewed as talented players that will progress with the team.

What are the opinions of NFL experts? For a change, they are in-sync with the opinion most rabid Chiefs fans have. Several experts have been quoted saying that of all the NFL teams in 2008, the Chiefs have the best draft selections. It seems obvious that team management is investing in new blood as Kansas City received the league's largest rookie pool at over eight million dollars. The only criticism that the team has to address is the fact that Jared Allen has no true successor. Will this affect the team's performance for the new season? Experts and fans don't believe so and are readying Kansas City up for a long awaited victory celebration.
